For Rachel Scott, the creative force behind Diotima, clothing begins not with fabric but with people. Ahead of her most recent presentation in downtown Manhattan, she turned to her community, asking them to share photographs of their grandmothers. The exercise underscored a recurring tension in her work: the scarcity — and often reductive nature — of visual records of Black and Caribbean women. Archival images tend to frame them solely as stoic or strong, erasing the nuance and complexity of their lives.

It is within this gap that Diotima has carved its identity. Since its launch, the brand has become known for weaving together handcraft, history and intimacy, positioning itself as both a fashion label and a cultural project. Scott’s reliance on personal photographs reflects her broader ambition: to restore depth and dimensionality to narratives long overlooked, while anchoring Diotima’s collections in lived experience rather than surface aesthetics. In doing so, the brand continues to differentiate itself in an increasingly crowded landscape, appealing to consumers who see fashion not just as product, but as a vessel for storytelling and representation.
